Nash & Clint [2005-2008]
Clint: We were never properly introduced. I'm Clint Buchanan, and Jessica, or Tess, as you know her, is my daughter.
Nash: I'm Nash Brennan, Mr. Buchanan. Tess and I are -- well, she's an amazing woman, sir. Just tell me if there's anything I can do to help her be that again.
Nash: Would you find it hard if the best part of the woman you love doesn't include you? It's --
Clint: Yeah, I would. But it is a possibility, so we have to prepare for it.
Nash: Right. Thank you.
Clint: What for?
Nash: You have been honest with me. You've helped me understand this. I appreciate that.
Nash: I will never maliciously take your daughter away from you. But I'm not giving up either. Whatever happens to her, whoever she ends up being, I'm not going to just walk away from the woman I love and the child that may be mine. I'm just not like that. I'm sorry.
Clint: I understand, son. Neither would I.
[Jessica wants to let Tess out to talk to Niki]
Clint: Jessica, I know you want to help, and, believe me, I don't like keeping Viki hostage in her own --
Jessica: Then let's try, Dad.
Clint: What if you end up in the same situation? No, Jessica, no.
Nash: Not a lot of free will in this house, is there, sir?
Nash: So Cristian is Antonio's brother, right?
Clint: That's right, and Natalie's husband, and he disappeared some time ago, and everybody believed that he was dead.
Nash: Now, why would anyone run away from here?
Nash: I saw you having lunch with that lady over there.
Clint: That was no lady, that was Dorian Lord.
[Clint offers Nash a room at the Buchanan mansion]
Nash: It's a kind offer, sir, but I -- I really think --
Clint: Hey, look, if this is a pride thing, get over it. We've got too much of that around here as it is.
Nash: Well, then you don't need any more of it.
[Nash tries to compare his and Tess's situation to Clint and Viki's]
Clint: I fell in love with the original woman. You fell in love with the alter.
Nash: Yes, the original, but she wasn't integrated, was she? So tell me, was it easy for you to fall in love with Niki Smith and all these other alters who were running around your house? Because after all, they were other parts of Viki.
Clint: Nothing about it was easy! And how dare you talk about my marriage, which you know nothing about. Niki Smith put me and my family through absolute agony. She used me and plotted against me, and all the while I was trying to save the woman who gave me the best years of my life. Viki and the kids were everything to me, and when I lost them, I lost a part of myself that I've -- I've never been able to get back. You talk about how much you love Tess, and that is all well and good. But it's not the same. Viki and I had a relationship that lasted for years. We had a marriage, we had family, a life.
Bo: (about Nash) Seems like a nice kid.
Clint: Yeah, he kind of grows on you.
[Nash has just watched the video tape of Tess being molested as a little girl]
Clint: Now you understand what Jessica endured and why she's so emotionally fragile.
Nash: Tess! It was Tess. That little girl is Tess, my Tess. Makes total sense. That's why she can't trust anybody. Her own family let her go with that sick, perverted -- where the hell were you? Son of a bitch!
Clint: You think I had any idea this was going on?
Nash: You should've. You were her daddy. It was your job to know. Here I've been afraid that I'm not ready to be a parent. Oh, I know -- I can do better than this, buddy.
Nash: You know, I've always had this little problem trusting people. I -- but now that I see how you and Viki have played us, treated your daughters, how you guys handle your family, I'm starting to understand why.
Clint: Nash, I never meant to betray you. And the way you were brought up, I'm sure that you find it hard to trust people.
Nash: I'll get over it.
Clint: But you may be a father soon, so you should understand how strong families work.
Nash: You know, I've -- I've seen how your strong family works. Clint, I'm not impressed.
Nash: I know that you see me as an outsider in all this, but I don't. I can't.
Clint: Nash, there's going to come a time when you have to.
Nash: You and Mrs. Davidson have been so very kind to me. You let me stay at your father's house. Mrs. Davidson sacrificing her sanity, her very existence for Tess, for Jess. Well, that kind of sacrifice --
Clint: She'd do more than that. She would do whatever it takes.
Nash: You are Both such good people. And I see that in Tess.
Clint: Nash, I --
Nash: I know you don't like to hear that, but Tess is the strong-willed and passionate woman that she is because of the two of you, and I never, ever take that for granted.
[Nash calls Clint from Napa]
Nash: Sir, I'm sorry, but that's my daughter, and you know me well enough to know I'm not going to just walk away from her.
Clint: Look, I understand how you feel, but you've got to do what's best for this baby.
Nash: What's best for the baby? You think that's Antonio? Sir, I'm going to take care of the Restons, and then I'm coming back to get my daughter. Bye.
Viki: For the life of me, I do not understand why you are so taken with Nash.
Clint: I am not taken with him. I just appreciate the fact that he loves my daughter.
[Nash is shocked to learn that Jessica is watching the tape of her abuse]
Clint: Look, I know how much you wanted to be there.
Nash: Would it make a difference?
Clint: Listen, as far as I'm concerned, you're family.
Antonio: I don't think Nash is going to be the kind of guy who's willing to stay in the background for long. I mean, he could -- he could come for Brennan at any time, and I'm sure he still wants to get through to Tess.
Clint: If I were in his shoes, I'd do the same thing.
Jessica: Wow. You got to know Nash pretty well, didn't you?
Clint: I did. I did, yeah.
Jessica: And you like him, don't you?
Clint: I think he's a decent and very caring young man.
Clint: Nash, Tess is now a part of Jessica --
Nash: Yes.
Clint: And Jessie's in love with Antonio. Can you accept that?
Nash: Well, Clint, do I have a choice?
Clint: (to Nash) I don't know what went on between you and Jessie, but in your speech, you were right. She deserves to be happy. Nash, I keep telling people that you're a good man. Thank you for not making a liar out of me.
Nash: You know what? If things had worked out just a little bit differently, you might be calling me that for real. Son-in-law, that is.
Clint: You mean, if Tess had been the dominant personality.
Nash: Yeah. What else would it be?
Nash: Jessica is a great girl. You and Mrs. Davidson did a great job with her.
Clint: You know, it's funny that you should say that because I was trying to convince Jessie's mother of that just now.
Nash: Yeah, I know she feels like she let her down. You, too. But it has occurred to me that I would have done anything to have parents like you two. It's another reason I wish things had worked out, me and Jess -- Tess. Tess.
Clint: You know something? Just because you'll never be my son-in-law doesn't mean that we can't be friends.
Nash: Well, I would like that.
Clint: You can count on it, Nash.
Nash: The day Jessica and Tess were integrated, the woman I loved died.
Clint: Well, then maybe you ought to bury her.
Nash: How am I supposed to do that, huh?
Clint: Son, you've got to find a way to say goodbye. So maybe you just sort of have -- I don't know -- a funeral for what the two of you shared together. You recognize it. You honor it. And then, Nash, you got to let go.
[Clint invites Nash to help him decorate the Christmas tree]
Clint: Are you one of those people who likes to start at the top of the tree or the bottom of the tree?
Nash: I really don't know. I've never done this before. I guess I'll follow your lead, do my best.
Clint: Bottom it is, then.
[Clint is annoyed to hear that Nash may have feelings for Jessica]
Viki: (about Nash) You were always his staunchest defender.
Clint: Yeah, well, that was before he kept sniffing around a married lady.
Clint: Viki's not only the mother of my children, it's just that I -- well, I care about her quite a bit.
Nash: Yeah, it's just maybe why you get that little cowboy glint and smile on your face every time you mention her name?
Clint: That obvious, is it?
Nash: Yeah.
Clint: Viki is patient and steady and she's honest, and Dorian, on the other hand -- she's, you know, a little wild and a lot unpredictable and she has only this passing know truth and that’s something about her I don’t care for.
Nash: By "patient, steady, and honest," you do mean judgmental, bullheaded and --
Clint: I wouldn't go there, son.
Clint: Are you developing feelings for Jessica?
Nash: Jessica is the mother of my child.
Clint: That's not what I asked. The question is, do you have feelings for her?
Nash: I suspect that I have the same feelings for her as you have for Viki. I mean, after all, we both have children with the woman in question.
Clint: You know, Jessica was in love with Antonio long before she met you. And she has pledged to love him for the rest of her life.
Nash: Yeah, I was at that wedding.
Clint: Nash, consider this a friendly warning. If you allow yourself to give in to your feelings for Jessie, you fall in love with her, you and several other people are going to be hurt and I'd hate to see that happen.
[Nash denies that he's falling in love with Jessica]
Nash: Antonio's my friend, They are both taking care of my baby. I want them to be very, very happy.
Clint: Nash, you're a man of honor. I do believe that. But even men of honor sometimes fall.
Nash: Tess always was Jessica, right? And Jessica is just the best parts of Tess.
Clint: I'm glad you understand that. Because if you didn't, it might get a little confusing for Bree. We don't want confusion.
Nash: No, we wouldn't want that, sir.
Clint: Look, son, this is complicated, but one thing is simple. I will always do the right thing for Jessie.
Nash: So will I. I promise you that.
Nash: I appreciate your concern, but I'm not afraid of Antonio or his threats, all right, Mr. Buchanan?
Clint: I wish the two of you would just get over yourselves. There's no room in this situation for posturing.
Nash: (about Jessica) She was confused because she's in love with me. She's been trying to tell Antonio. She was going to tell Antonio, but she collapsed.
Clint: And why did that happen? The stress of telling Antonio, right?
Nash: Maybe. But look, if she hadn't gotten sick, we wouldn't know that she's sick, and then the cancer could have spread, and -- and she might not have had a chance.
Clint: You know what that is? That is good spin on a bad situation.
Nash: (to Clint) Jessica is in love with me. She's going to need me now. Everybody has been shutting me out. Now, I'm not saying I blame you, because you didn't know. But you know now, don't you? So nobody is going to keep me away from her anymore. I'm sorry, sir. I know you're just looking out for your daughter. But please believe me, so am I. I would do anything to save her. Everything that is in my heart I'd give to save her.
[Nash and Clint are hanging out in Jessica's hospital room before the wedding ceremony]
Paige: Wouldn’t you gentlemen like to step outside and discuss the reception plans?
Clint: Oh, there'll be plenty of time for that after the operation.
Paige: Ah. Well, isn’t it bad luck for the groom to see the bride before the wedding?
Nash: You crazy? This is the luckiest day of my life.
Clint: That doesn’t apply to me. I'm the father of the bride.
Paige: You guys are such men. Would you mind just stepping outside so I can examine her?
Nash: Yeah. Why didn’t you just say that?
Clint: Son, I understand why you want to get married right away, and I think it’s great. It’s going to lift Jessica’s spirits and give her the strength she needs to get through this.
Nash: She’s going to get through this. She’s going to be fine, Clint.
Clint: Well, yeah, she will, and this time, it’s going to work. And that’s why I need to know that you're going to love and respect my daughter, and honor all the promises that are in your wedding vows, which I'm sure you got up in your head. Nash? I want you to do this not only for my Jessie, but for little Bree, as well.
Nash: I am so sorry, sir -- I had forgotten myself. Um -- I will make you proud to have me as a son-in-law if you will give me permission to not only keep all the promises in my vow, but I -- I will also endeavor to make her happy every day if you will allow me to, sir.
Clint: You got it.
[Clint offers to give Nash money to buy the vineyard from Antonio]
Clint: Now, how much do you need?
[Nash shows Clint the amount]
Nash: That much.
Clint: Uh-huh. Well, at least it’s cheaper than buying a new liver.
Nash: What’s that?
Clint: Nothing.
Clint: If you don’t pay me back, I'm sending Natalie to find you.
Nash: Ooh, no, not that. Anything but the crazy redhead. Kidding.
Nash: Shouldn’t we be drawing up a contract and getting it notarized, and all that?
Clint: Are you going to pay me back?
Nash: Yeah, you have my word.
Clint: That’s good enough for me.
[Asa has just informed the family that they all have to agree on decisions for Buchanan Enterprises]
Clint: I don't believe this.
Nash: Just a question -- have all of you all agreed on anything ever?
[Clint breaks up a fight between Nash and Jared]
Clint: What the hell is going on?
Nash: I hit him.
Clint: I got that part.
[Clint says his goodbyes to Nash before Nash dies]
Clint: Nash. You're such a good man. Thank you for loving my daughter the way you have.
[Jared goes to see Clint after Nash's death]
Jared: Well, if there's anything I can do to start to make this right --
Clint: Wait. Make it right? Can you bring Nash back? Never mind tanking the company that my father started. Can you bring back my daughter's husband?
Clint: I'm so sorry, honey. I loved Nash as if he were my own son.
Jessica: I know, and he knew it, too, and it meant a lot to us. Thank you.
[Clint speaks at Nash's funeral]
Clint: When I first met Nash Brennan, I didn't like him -- not at all. I thought he was reckless, antagonistic, combative -- and on top of that, he claimed to love my daughter. Now, what father wouldn't be terrified? But after a while, I found that these traits that I thought I hated -- they had a different side. And in a certain situation, recklessness became fearlessness and his readiness take up arms -- well, that just meant that Nash wasn't about to walk away from the woman he loved just because she had a disapproving daddy. I was proud to call him family, and I'm sorry I wasted time thinking that he could be anything less.
Clint: (to Jared) You know, I share the blame in all this because I mishandled Dorian, but you made her assault on B.E. possible, and you drove my son-in-law over the edge. Now, Jessica may be able to forgive you for all that. Apparently, she's a far more generous person than I am, because what you did to my family -- lying to everybody and hurting Renee so deeply and making Nash's life just miserable -- it was unconscionable. And you did it with utter and complete selfishness. Now, as your hero Asa would say, "that sticks in my craw."
